The History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day has its origins in the end of World War I, often referred to as "the war to end all wars." Hostilities ceased on November 11, 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany took effect.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day, dedicated to honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in World War I. In 1954, after the United States had engaged in World War II and the Korean War, Congress officially changed the holiday's name to Veterans Day, broadening its recognition to honor all U.S. military veterans, past and present.

The Significance of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, which is observed in May to honor those who have lost their lives in military service.
